A diary of happenings at Chanters Lodge, Livingstone, Zambia with reflections on Zambia and personal matters too

GAETAN BENOIT & ASHLEY HORNER
Gaetan and Ashley pictured above, live in Belgium and whilst Gaetan is Belgian, Ashley's Canadian, hailing from Kelowna, British Columbia. 'Ripe with surprises' says the website about Kelowna.......so was this show.......but let's not go there! Which show? The Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient, of course, our regular Sunday night radio programme which airs on Zambezi Radio, 107.5 fm, Livingstone's best loved local radio station. Gaetan and Ashley were our most recent Guests.

This lovely couple had been travelling through Southern Africa with Ashley's father and mother, Rob and Karen, sister Melissa and husband Neil, and chose accommodation in Livingstone provided by Chanters Lodge for their visit to see the mighty Victoria Falls. "Were you surprised to be asked to come on radio?" We asked. "It was pre-arranged by e mail", revealed Ashley, "and we were the members of the family told we'd be doing it!" That was true, I had pre-arranged an appearance on the show with Ashley's dad Rob - something we don't usually do - but this time I could tell from the e mails that the family would be great on air and so they were!

"How long have you been going out together?" Milli Jam asked Ashley & Gaetan After the opening two numbers on the show: 'Diva' by Beyonce and 'Spaceman' by The Killers, my 'song-of-the-moment'. "It ain't so bad, dream makers gonna make you mad"...yes well... "About six years" replied Ashley to Milli Jam's question. "Why aren't you married?" He went on persistently! "Because Gaetan's cheap!" Butted in Ashley before Gaetan had time to think. Laughs all round! "Too busy!" Was Gaetan's take on this particular situation! They should be. Gaetan's a retail manager with Champion Stores in Belgium, and Ashley a nurse in the intensive care unit of Queen Fabiola Children's University Hospital. Inaugurated in 1986, Queen Fabiola Children's University Hospital is the only Belgian university hospital entirely reserved for children's medicine.

"Have you been Twittering?" Milli Jam asked me. "Of course" I replied. "Do people in Zambia know about Twitter?" Asked Gaetan. "They do now" I replied. "What have you Twittered about?" asked Milli Jam, still getting used to the language. "Kennedy Mweene, Melinda Silubwa, unseasonal rain, Livingstone Forum on TripAdvisor" I explained. "Have your followers increased?" Milli Jam wanted to know. "Yes" I replied. They have too.

"Have you been to Africa before?" Milli Jam asked Gaetan and Ashley. Gaetan said he'd been to Tunisia, and Ashley that she'd spent some months in Mozambique as a volunteer. "Before we arrived in Livingstone" they told listeners "we were on safari in Botswana and saw just about every kind of animal you could think of, except rheeno." "Rhino" I corrected automatically without thinking! I wish I could speak French as well as Gaetan speaks English! "How did you meet?" Milli Jam asked the couple "I was an exchange student at Gaetan's high school in Belgium" replied Ashley. Childhood sweethearts! "Was it love at first sight?" I wondered. "No!" They replied in unison!

We played a couple of local numbers: Dandy Crazy with 'Chintelelwe'. George Soulchild's translation 'he talks about a man who sometimes has it rough but when he gets home his wife is his shed or shelter'. And Danny's 'Shishita' - 'caught napping!' (Use your imagination!) We also played two hot hits from the UK charts La Roux with 'In For The Kill' and Calvin Harris's 'I'm Not Alone'. Milli Jam rounded off with 'Kiss Me Through The Phone' by Soulja Boy. This was Milimo's play list and it was great!

We explained to listeners that Ashley and Gaetan and the rest of the Horner family had brought some materials to give to the children at Nalituwe Basic School, just around the corner from Chanters Lodge, and that they'd be going with Annastasia Katele, Assistant to the Director, on Monday morning, the first day of the new term, to make the donation. "Great stuff!" We said.

What kind of music were our Guests into? All types, they said, but Gaetan has a soft spot for Phil Collins. And sport? Tennis and 'ping pong' said Gaetan laughing. No soccer. Just as well, seeing the Arsenal results were desperate for us fans. Where would Gaetan and Ashley like to be and what would they like to be doing ten years from now? Running their own business. For Ashley, anyway, that runs in the family so it's a dead cert!
