The Jericho Experience!

Meet Jay Jericho Kashiya (above) Guest on the most recent edition of the Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Jay Hillz. ‘The Experience’ is our weekly radio show, sponsored by Chanters Lodge, airing for an hour every Sunday night on Zambezi 107.7 fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station. Jay, (or Jericho as Milli Jam preferred to call him, seeing there were two Jays in the studio) told listeners that he lives in Lusaka but was visiting Livingstone partly for work but mostly for love! It transpired that the love of his life Niza, stays in Livingstone. Half way through the show Jericho recited a poem he had written for Niza, ‘The Girl From Ellen Brittel’. We cried! Ellen Brittel is one of the Livingstone suburbs and we speculated that when he announced the title but before Jericho said who the poem was for, there must have been a lot of excited girls right there in Ellen Brittel!

Jericho told listeners that he is a graduate from the University of Zambia holding a degree in education with a major in history. He also has a certificate in marketing, and is currently studying for a diploma in business management. After a short time teaching at Mpelembe Secondary school, Jericho decided that despite his degree in education, teaching ‘was not really for him’. Currently, Jericho is a membership officer with the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants, a position he has held for the past 17 months. His responsibilities include recruitment and events. The Institute in Zambia has some 5000 members at different levels. He lives in Rhodes Park and travels daily to work near Arcades fortunately against the flow of the traffic, notoriously congested in Lusaka at rush hours.

The music on the show was good as usual, opening with tracks from Chris Brown ft Ariana Grande and Professor Green ft Tori Kelly. Jay and Milli Jam chose tracks from Crisis Mr Swagger, Labrinth, Judy ft Muzo, and Mary J Blige. Our oldie of the week was by Chilu, but no-one won the prize of a dinner for two at the lodge we give to the first person to text us telling us who’s the artist on the track. My pick of the week was a new one from 1D – ‘Fireproof’ and we closed with a new track from Jennifer Hudson ft Iggy Azalea.

Jericho told listeners that in football locally he favours Nkana Red Devils and in UK he supports Manchester City. His favourite player is Mario Baletelli even though he is no longer with City. Music wise he loves Pompi, a Zambian artist and Emile Sande, a Zambian artist busy being Scottish! He loves rap, R&B and sometimes Rhumba. In his spare time he writes poems (we gathered that!) He’s always busy studying and reading for his further education. Milimo wanted to know if he had ever done the bungee jump in Livingstone and this wise, likeable young man said that even the thought terrified him! He has a Facebook page and is also on LinkedIn.

Asked where he would like to be and what he would like to be doing ten years’ from now, Jay Jericho Kashiya said that he would like to be married with three children and to be a business leader, the chief executive officer of a large company. We thanked him for coming on the show and wished him the best of luck in the future.

The Falls Park Experience!

Meet Michelo Mweene (above), a man with perhaps one of the most difficult jobs in Livingstone. Mich, as he is known to friends, manages the Falls Park Shopping Mall in Livingstone, next to Protea Hotel. This was Livingstone’s first shopping mall, and at the time it opened, with Spar as its’ anchor tenant, was a thriving shopping centre with all the shops and restaurants occupied. Following the opening of the ‘new’ Shoprite closer to the city centre, Falls Park has fallen on hard times. Mich, an accountant by profession, works for African Life Insurance who manage the property. He advised us that negotiations were ongoing with a large company for them to become new anchor tenants in the complex, with the hope of restoring its’ fortunes.

Mich was our Guest on the most recent edition of the Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Jay Hillz, our weekly radio show airing from 20.30-21.30 hrs on Zambezi 107.7 fm every Sunday night. The show is a nice mixture of latest international and Zambian music interspersed by chat with our guest. Mich told listeners that he had been in Livingstone for about a year and a half but had been employed by African Life for three years, initially in the finance department. He also has a business interest in a small roadside bar in Livingstone. Still single and not yet a father, Mich told us that he intends to marry soon – the lucky lady is in Kabwe at the moment, but beyond that we were not given details!

The music on the show featured tracks from Envy, One Republic and Jessie Ware, as well as Zambian acts Afunika, Macky 2 and Kay Figo. Other songs were by Sigma ft Paloma Faith and Jason Derulo. The prize we give each week to the first person to text us the name of the artist on our oldie of the week was quickly snapped up!

Mich, a Manchester United supporter, told listeners that he was convinced his team would put their troubles behind them and scoop the EPL again this coming season, others of us were not so sure! His all time favourite player – David Beckham. Current star? Wayne Rooney. We tried to wish him the best of luck in the league this year but failed, and talked instead of Arsenal winning the Community Shield that very afternoon 3-0 v Manchester City!

Mich said that he is at level two in the accountants’ ACCA exams and that it was quite stressful. We sympathised. He also told us that he enjoys a good night out and that his favourite Livingstone club is at the Fairmount Hotel. (Many of our show guests say the same). He likes slow tracks as well as hip hop and his favourite Zambian act is Afunika. Internationally he favours Kendrik Lamar. He plays social football and Falls Park have a local team for which he stars!

Asked where he would like to be and what he would like to be doing ten years’ from now, Mich said he would like to have his own business be providing employment for other Zambians, and to be married with children.

Akafekwa Mututwa

Akafekwa (above) stepped in as our Guest on the most recent edition of the Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring George Soulchild – that’s our weekly Sunday night radio show airing at 20.30 hrs every Sunday night on Zambezi 107.7 fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station. The Guest whom we had booked was a ‘no show’ and we were very grateful to Akafekwa for filling the gap. He was a great Guest too!

Akafekwa told listeners that he is the sales manager of a newly established company selling porcelain tiles in Livingstone – ‘Tile Giant’ and that he enjoys the job. An accountant by profession he holds both a certificate in accounting as well as an accounts technicians diploma from NIPA in Lusaka. Before joining Tile Giant he had worked for Chrismar Hotels in Lusaka and here in Livingstone. Tile Giant is located in the same premises as The Hard Rock Cafe in Livingstone which provoked a few questions!

How come Akafekwa was on hand to Guest on our show? Well, he had come to the studio with George following a show that George – a rap musician – had been playing at Taonga Safaris who have a great location on the banks of the Zambezi. The place rocks on Sunday afternoons, just ask the elephants! “How long have you known George?” Milli Jam wanted to know and Mr Mututwa explained that they had been school mates together in Mongu, Western Province and had met up again when he, Akafekwa, arrived in Livingstone some 2 years ago. Akafekwa claimed to be George’s manager and Milli Jam immediately wanted to know ‘where’s the album?’ an FAQ in recent months. “It’s coming, it’s coming” we were told angrily!

The music on the show was good, we opened with our theme ‘Feel The Love’ by Rudimental featuring John Newman. The theme will change in the new year and we already have a few ideas for a new theme for next year. We dropped tracks from One Direction and Calvin Harris. George played Zonefam’s ‘Lobola’ noting that this fab Zambian band had picked up a Channel O Africa award just the previous night! He also played his own track featuring Maji – ‘Enter Enter’. Milli Jam gave us tracks from Alicia Keys and Avicii and our oldie of the week from Justin Bieber. The prize we give to the first person to text us telling us the name of the artist on our oldie of the week was quickly snapped up.

Akafekwa told listeners that his favourite type of music is R&B and that his favourite artist is R Kelly. He is, he explained, a big fan of Manchester United and was quite sanguine about the fact that they had only been able to draw with Spurs that afternoon. Milli Jam and I spent a few moments discussing Arsenal’s position at the top of the EPL while others listened! Akafekwa said he had done quite a lot of the tourist activities available in Livingstone but had never done the bungee jump nor swum in Devil’s Pool. He told listeners that he was married with two sons, the youngest of which was just over one month old. “Awwww” we said! His wife is a teacher at Faith Academy Trust School in Livingstone.

Asked where he would like to be and what he would like to be doing in ten years’ time, our lively laughing Guest told us that he wanted to be a happily married family man with a very successful country wide tile company to his name – a real tile giant in fact! We wished him the best of luck.

DJ Baks On Air At ‘The Experience’

Meet Malenga Suzyo Ngwenya (above) better known to listeners of Zambezi 107.7fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station, and to his fans, as ‘DJ Baks’! When Baks guested on the most recent edition of the Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring George Soulchild, the first thing Milli Jam wanted to know was where his radio name came from. Baks explained that the letters were made up from his own and his dad’s initials, as his dad had been a great inspiration to him. When Malenga also explained to listeners that in fact he is an accountant by profession and a DJ/radio presenter on the side, I wondered on air whether he should actually be called DJBux – the man with the money, but Malenga rejected my suggestion!

Malenga told us that he works full time as an accountant for Cornerstone Insurance in Livingstone and is a part time presenter for Zambezi 107.7 fm, hosting two shows per week, both from 00.00 hrs to 05.00 hrs. He explained that he’s able to delegate his work at the insurance company to be able to arrive later in the morning after he’s been on air all night on the ‘graveyard shift’. Malenga trained as an accountant at Evelyn Hone College for two years qualifying in 2011 although he is still studying for further accountancy qualifications. It was while at college in Lusaka that he had his first taste of radio work, being a DJ on Hone FM, the first ‘college radio’ station in the country.

The music on our show was good. George dropped two tracks by the late Crystal Shaun – ‘Elina’ and ‘Kasuba’ in memory of his friend. We featured hits from Sean Paul and Matt Cardle with Melanie C at the top of the show. Milimo chose tracks from Selena Gomez and Naughty Boy. Our oldie of the week was the Spice Girls ‘Viva Forever’ and the prize we give to the first person to text us the name of the performing artist was quickly snapped up. My pick was a new track from DJFresh ft Ellie Goulding and we closed with Armin Van Buuren’s ‘Beautiful Life’ featuring Cindy Alma.

Malenga said his own favourite music is slow tracks, R&B, and hip hop, with Ty2 his favourite artist locally, internationally Eminem. His favourite club in Livingstone, and being single he loves clubbing, is Ayoba and we noted with interest the new balcony the club had opened ‘Ayoba Sky’. Malenga supports Chelsea and noted his favourite players as Didier Drogba and goal keeper Peter Czec. As Malenga had only been in Livingstone for a few months he had not yet had time to enjoy any of the many tourist activities on offer.

Asked where he would like to be and what he would like to be doing in ten years’ time, DJ Baks said simply that he would like to be his own boss – ‘like Richard’!! One of the reasons was that he would then not be required to wear a jacket and tie to work. We laughed. You don’t meet many DJ/Accountants and DJBaks is a great example. We wished him the best of luck.

The Auditor

Thanks to a Facebook friend for this classic – apologies to all of this profession who might read and fail to be amused (they often are not amused)!

Once upon a time there was a shepherd looking after his sheep on the side of a deserted road. Suddenly a brand new Porsche screeches to a halt. The driver, a man dressed in an Armani suit, Cerutti shoes, Ray-Ban sunglasses, TAG-Heuer wrist-watch, and a Pierre Cardin tie gets out and asks the shepherd, ‘If I can tell you how many sheep you have, will you give me one of them?’

The shepherd looks at the young man, then looks at the large flock of grazing sheep and replies, ‘Okay.’ The young man parks the car, connects his laptop to the mobile-fax, enters a NASA Website, scans the ground using his GPS, opens a database and 60 Excel tables filled with algorithms and pivot tables. He then prints out a 150-page report on his high-tech mini-printer, turns to the shepherd and says, ‘You have exactly 1,586 sheep.’

The shepherd cheers, ‘That’s correct, you can have your sheep.’The young man takes one of the animals from the flock and puts it in the back of his Porsche. The shepherd looks at him and asks, ‘If I guess your profession, will you return my animal to me?’ The young man answers, ‘Yes, why not?’

The shepherd says, ‘You are an auditor.’ ‘How did you know?’ asks the young man. ‘Very simple,’ answers the shepherd.’Firstly, you came here without being wanted. Secondly, you charged me a fee to tell me something I already knew. Thirdly, you don’t understand anything about my business…..

Now can I have my dog back?
