Honourable, Apostle Petersen Zagaze Banda, Mr Speaker Sir

Renowned Zambian music artist Mundia Mukubesa, famously known as Petersen, says the only way young people will accomplish their dreams is by not indulging in bad vices such as drug abuse. He also appealed to the Livingstone youth to take full responsibility in keeping the tourist capital clean, even after the UNWTO general assembly is long over, he further encouraged them to fully participate in clean politics and said they should refrain from being used as political tools of violence .

Petersen, controversial for his #Bufi song which features Pilato, cited that Bflow and Macky2 among others are some of the artists who don’t drink and smoke but are living their dreams. Petersen, who recently got rid of his dreadlocks because he doesn’t like the dryer heat and because he had suffered stigmatization from the law enforcement agencies on suspicion of smoking marijuana, says he has started a new chapter in the Zambian music industry. He has subsequently changed his stage name from Petersen to ‘’Honourable, Apostle Petersen Zagaze Banda, Mr Speaker Sir’’ – he says the change was mostly influenced by his fans as somehow he feels he speaks for them!

The artist was hosted last week by George and E-vibes on the mighty breakfast show on Zambezi FM.

Bob, Cindy Orr and The Butterfly Tree

Meet Bob and Cindy Orr, both mathematics teachers from New Jersey, USA, and currently Guests at Chanters Lodge, Livingstone as well as volunteers with the Butterfly Tree Charity working out at Mukuni Village near Livingstone, Zambia. Bob and Cindy were Guests on the most recent edition of ‘The Chanters Lodge Experience with The Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Kaufela’, our regular Sunday night radio show on
Zambezi 107.7 fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station.

Bob and Cindy told our listeners that, founded in 2006 by Jane Kaye-Bailey, The Butterfly Tree Charity supports rural communities in Zambia decimated by the HIV and AIDS pandemic – providing safe water, feeding programmes and improved health and education facilities as well as an orphan sponsorship programme. Had they been teaching maths out at the village? We wondered, but this charming couple explained that they’d been busy interviewing and filming the children at the Mukuni Village School with the aim of making a video, and also to help them in the preparation of a programme for students. The video would also eventually be used for fund raising purposes back in the USA.

Bob and Cindy said that not only was this their first visit to Zambia but also to Africa and that they were thrilled with the experience thus far. While most of their time had been taken up out at the village they had had time for one or two tourist activities, namely a one day safari to Chobe NP in Botswana and the rhino walk that very morning in our own Mosi-o-Tunya NP in Livingstone. They had enjoyed both trips immensely especially being able to see the animals close up. “Any rhino, elephant and hippo in New Jersey?” We wondered. “Only in zoos!” The predictable reply.

The music on the show was great as usual. We opened with new tracks from Redfoo (of LMFAO fame) and Wiley. Kaufela’s Zambian selections were Roberto’s ‘Eponaba’ and Starn’s ‘Wachimfya’. No translations available! Milli Jam dropped Robin Thicke’s smash ‘Blurred Lines’ back to back with Ne-Yo’s latest ‘Keep Talking’. Our oldie of the week was Beyonce’s ‘Halo’ and the prize we give to the first person to text us the name of the performing artist was quickly snapped up. My pick of the week was Estelle’s ‘Call These Boys Up’ for the Chanters Girls at the lodge.

Bob and Cindy told listeners they had been married for 27 years and had a son and a daughter David 21 and Kate 25 respectively. No grandchildren as yet. We wondered if they had been affected by horrible hurricane Sandy that hit New Jersey recently and they told listeners that although they had lost some 25 trees on their property, otherwise theirs had been a lucky escape, compared to the decimation suffered by other people. The couple were looking forward to seeing the Victoria Falls before they left for the USA and hoped to make a return visit to Zambia in 2014. Music wise Cindy said she loved jazz, Bob that he was more into 60’s and 70’s rock.

Asked where they would like to be and what they would like to be doing ten years from now, Bob told listeners that he hoped to still be teaching maths but also being helpful to people in Africa in need of clean water and other assistance. Cindy said she hoped to be travelling, developing her second career as a poet, as well as making a return visit to Zambia.

We wished them the best of luck and thanked them for appearing on our show.

Jay Fuse On The Experience

It’s not often on The Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Kaufela that we have a live performance, so on the latest edition we were delighted when Jay Fuse (pictured above) sang the lead single off his latest album live on the show. ‘The Experience’ is our weekly Sunday night radio show airing on Zambezi 107.7 fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station, from 20.30-21.30 hrs and streaming on the internet. Jay also gave us a copy of his new CD to give away as a prize on the next show. We give a prize every week to the first person to text us telling us who’s singing our oldie of the week. On this show George chose ‘I Love You Daddy’ by Ricardo & Friends. Sneaky! No-one won, all the responders thought it was Michael Jackson!

Jay Fuse (real name Jay Phiri) is an up and coming Zambian musician, the lead single on his new CD is ‘Little Child’ – a touching track about the plight of orphans in Zambia. His album is titled ‘After Light’  and a jolly good listen it is too! It has nine tracks and is a mixture of English and vernacular. “Fused in fact” said Jay Fuse! “How did you get that name?” Milli Jam wanted to know and Jay explained that he gave himself the name because he loves to fuse his own feelings into his music. Jay is currently in cabaret at Chrismar Hotel in Livingstone and performs a three hour show every Friday and Saturday nights. “Gosh, you must need a huge repertoire!” We commented, and Jay agreed that he did need a lot of material to fill the time. He mixes covers with his own songs. More fusion!

Apart from Jay’s great live performance, George dropped the new ‘Zonefam’ single ‘Lobola’ featuring Shom C in the Zambian sector of the show. We opened proceedings with ‘Antenna’ by ODG featuring Wyclef Jean, a huge hit in UK. Milli Jam played ‘Carry You’ by Union J back to back with Beyonce’s ‘Rise Up’ as well as Naughty Boy with Sam Smith and their hit ‘La La La’. My pick of the week was Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can’t Stop’.

Jay told listeners that he was single and not dating. “Calm down!” I urged the Chanters Girls listening back at the lodge, before doubting whether any musician anywhere could be single and not dating! He explained that he had been introduced to music by his late dad, a member of the very successful 80’s Lusaka band ‘Rising Stars’. He told us that he had been playing the guitar and singing for about 9 years. His own music preferences are oldies, South African tracks and ‘Kalindula’ (Zambian). His greatest influence in music in Zambia he listed as ‘Uncle Rex’.

Asked where he would like to be and what he would like to be doing in ten years’ time, this good looking, personable and talented young Zambian musician said that he would like still to be a musician going to more places and doing new and different things. We did not doubt his future success!

Old Croc Rocks!

From Alicia our last edition’s ‘youngest ever’ Guest on ‘The Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Kaufela’, this week we switched to ‘oldest ever’ in the shape of Jo Mcgregor Brooks (above) who clocked in at a young 85 years old, though during the show he laid claim to 57 – later admitting that this was the number of years he’d been in Zambia! The Experience is our weekly radio show airing at 20.30 hrs CAT for an hour every Sunday night on Zambezi 107.7 fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station, and is a lively mixture of latest international as well as Zambian music and chat with our ‘Guest of the Week’. The show is popular locally, partly due to the fact that each week we give away dinner for two with drinks at the lodge, to the first person to text us telling us who’s singing our ‘oldie of the week’. Jane won on this show knowing that Will Smith sang ‘Switch’ way back. Her prize was enhanced by Jo who kindly donated a trip for two to the Livingstone Crocodile Park as well!

Jo told listeners that at age 14 he had enrolled in the British Army and had served for some 11 years. In 1956 he took up an appointment with the then colonial government of Northern Rhodesia – later Zambia – as a game ranger and had, altogether, spent some 50 years in the bush. “Did he miss it?” We wondered. “Not really”, he replied, saying he felt he had ‘served his time’ and anyway roundly blamed the job on his poor hearing, explaining that he had, over the years, fired about 1000 rounds from a 458 without wearing ear muffs. His job involved shooting troublesome or injured game in the Zambia National Parks. He told listeners that from time to time he still goes out to shoot when and where there is need. He and his son Ian had opened the Livingstone Crocodile Park in 1996 and Jo said he got great support from Zambian visitors though there were not enough tourists. There were some 70 crocs in the park with snakes and other reptiles too. “Well worth a visit if you come to Livingstone!” We said.

The music on the show was ‘latest’. We opened with Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ back to back with Naughty Boy’s ‘La La La’, numbers one and two in that night’s UK charts. George dropped the highly controversial ‘Bufi’ by Petersen and Pilato, a commentary on the current political situation in Zambia. He coupled that with Tasila Mwale’s lovely ‘Ready For Love’. Milli Jam featured Beyonce’s ‘Standing On The Sun’ back to back with ‘Soundbwoy’ from the entertaining Stylo G. Our pick of the week was Emile Sande’s ‘Easier To Cry’ and we closed with Fergie, Q-Tip and Goonrock’s ‘A Little Party Never Killed Nobody’. “Do you party?” We asked Jo. “What?” he replied “Do you party?” We insisted. “You mean Limpo’s?” Jo replied and we laughed at his reference to one of Livingstone’s hot nightspots, but we never did get a definitive reply!

Jo told listeners that he was a Scot, born in Bowness-on-Solway near Stirling. He has 3 children and 6 grand chidren aged 13-30 but no great grand children ‘that he knew of’! He is a widower. He had been closely involved with the construction of the Kariba Dam helping to rescue animals relocated because of the work, and protecting villagers from displaced, angry, marauding game. At one time he and his family had a huge crocodile farm in Sinazongwe housing some 7000 crocodiles, raised and killed for skins and meat. They had also owned and managed a garage in Choma for years, selling fuel and servicing vehicles. Jo likes country and western music – Dolly Parton and Kenny Rodgers and supports Manchester United because he ‘likes winners’.

Asked when he would retire he replied ‘never! When you retire you die!’ We wondered to what he attributed his long life and he replied ‘I don’t smoke, drink or do drugs and every day I take one table spoon of crocodile fat which boosts my immune system’! “Get in!” We said, as George and Milli Jam asked when they were going to be shown around the crocodile park! It was a good show with a great guest!

Cleo – The Ice Queen

Thanks to Kaufela, co-host of our Sunday night radio show on Zambezi 107.7 fm, and Duncan Sodala, good friend and manager of Zambia’s famous Zonefam of ‘Sinjonjo’ fame who fill us is in about Cleo, one of Zambia’s participants in the latest edition of Big Brother Africa – The Chase. We wish her the best of luck!

“We had the chance to sit down with Cleo Ice Queen and this is what she had to say:-
There are two sides to me, one side is Ice Queen the other side is Cleo. Cleo is more of the sentimental person and Ice Queen is the business minded and often standoffish kind of person. I like to keep things professional when I am in a working environment. I remember being a performer as early as four years old, one of the first influences in my music was Bow Wow (they used to call me that in High School) – but I was also very drawn to the music of Mr.Tupac Shakur.

One of my first major achievements was winning the Rap For A Million while I was still in High School. When I had my daughter at twenty I would say she become a huge source of my inspiration, I became focused and now I want to leave a legacy by which to remember me. My Management Team Kamikazi Entertainment keep me grounded and hold me down all the time, I am working on something called “Kamikazi Woman” – which will be Women Empowerment through the use of Arts, Dance and Theatre. In 2013 I have collaborations lined up with Jaynamic (South Africa), JK (Zambia), Raydo (Digital X), Nana (XYZ), Salma Dodia and others…

One of the major highlights in 2012 for me was being nominated as one of the best female rappers in South Africa, even though I was not victorious – It gave me a platform to meet other artists and be exposed to a larger audience. The South African Industry has a lot of opportunities and I have not faced a lot of challenges being from Zambia and being female. I do get a lot of comparisons to Nicki Minaj but I just do me and continue to reinvent myself.

Another highlight of 2012 was recording on Tswa Daar remix for Khuli Chana. I met him at Mozboy Studio, we exchanged contacts and a while later he called me up and I recorded my final verse at Raw-X studios, all I can say is it was simply amazing and I thank him for putting me on.

Alicia Rocks The Experience!

Meet Alicia and her mum Valerie Sutherland (pictured above), Guests on the most recent edition of ‘The Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Kaufela’ – that’s our regular Sunday night radio show airing from 20.30-21.30 hrs CAT on Zambezi 107.7 fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station. At age nine, I think I’m right in saying that Alicia was the ‘youngest Guest ever’ to grace our show! Shy? No way! Mum Valerie appeared recently on a video with our very own Kaufela featuring Roberto on a track called ‘Good Woman’ – here’s the YouTube link if you’d like to watch. We played the track on the show and Alicia surprised us in the studio by knowing all the words of the song and rapping along! Great stuff. The cute little girl is a student at Musikili Primary School in Mazabuka, on an extended ‘holiday’ due to a recent operation to remove her tonsils.

Valerie told listeners that she had initially qualified in the tourism and hospitality sector following her education at St Mary’s Secondary School in Livingstone and had subsequently joined Bushtracks Zambia as an assistant manager in their activity centre at Sun International Hotels. During this time she undertook most of the available tourist activities including, to our surprise, the bungee jump! After a two year stint with Bushtracks she decided to branch out on her own and recently opened Bee Hive Cafe in Livingstone, (opposite Protea Hotel) – a trendy bar and night spot with a live band – Stag Vibration – at weekends. The Bee Hive has recently introduced a menu of Zambian speciality foods with a view to attracting tourists keen to sample our traditional dishes.

The music on the show was great, Kaufela coupled his track ‘Good Woman’ with T-Sean’s ‘Boza’ (lies). At the top of the show we featured Daft Punk’s ‘Lose Yourself To Dance’ back to back with ‘Heart Attack’ by Demi Levato. Milli Jam played tracks from Lawson ft B.o.B and Carly Rae Jepsen. Our oldie of the week was ‘Where Did Our Love Go’ by The Supremes, but no-one won the prize of a dinner for two at the lodge given to the first person to text us telling us the name of the performing artist. My pick was Stooshie’s ‘Slip’- fairly reminiscent of that Supremes track?

Valerie said that she’d written the lyrics to loads of songs and we urged her to start performing with the live band at The Beehive. She also told listeners that Alicia has a younger sister and, on being asked if her appearance with Kaufela on the video meant something deeper replied unsmilingly – ‘I am in a relationship’! We swiftly moved on! Music wise she said she likes tracks ‘with a good meaning in the message’ and that her favourite artist was Usher – she had recently been to one of his shows in Johannesburg which she had loved. She was not into football but was into motor sport especially F1. She admitted to enjoying a night out in a club once in a while and favoured East Point of the available night spots in Livingstone.

Asked where she would like to be and what she would like to be doing in ten years’ time, this young, vibrant ambitious entrepreneur said she hoped to be happy, healthy, wiser and thriving, going forward to meet her goals! We did not doubt it!

From ‘The Wilderness’ to ‘The Experience’!

Wondering about the headline? Wonder no more! It’s simple! The Guest on the most recent edition of ‘The Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Kaufela’ was Carol Princess Buuse Hamaimbo who works for Wilderness Safaris as a tourism consultant here in Livingstone. ‘The Experience’ is our one hour long weekly Sunday night radio show on Zambezi 107.7 fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station. The show airs at 20.30 hrs CAT for an hour and is a lively mixture of local and international music as well as chat with our Guest of the week. Streams live too on 107.7’s website (currently under reconstruction).

Carol told listeners that she’d been working for Wilderness for six years since completing her certificate and then Diploma In Tourism Studies at LIBES (Livingstone Institute for Business and Engineering Studies). She loved her job and said that the most exciting part was never knowing what different Guests would want. She told us she felt that being attentive and giving sufficient attention to detail were the most important parts of the work. Milli Jam noted that Carol had been guesting recently on Kaufela and E-Vibes’ morning breakfast show on 107.7 fm and asked if she had ambitions to be a radio presenter. She replied that before taking to the tourism industry she had thought about a career in journalism, and did not rule out going into radio later in her career.

The music on the show was exciting, fresh and new. We opened with ‘This Is What It Feels Like’ from the hugely popular Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren featuring Trevor Guthrie, back to back with Alexis Jordan’s stomping ‘Acid Rain’. George chose Chef 187 ft Mosh Money – ‘Foolish Me’ and Petersen Zagaze’s – ‘Nakupokolola’ for his local tracks. Milli Jam played Cody Simpson’s ‘Pretty Brown Eyes’ and a track from Drake. Our oldie of the week where we give a prize of a dinner for two at the lodge with drinks to the first person to text us the name of the performing artist was a Petersen track and ‘Mohammed’ won. My pick of the week was Chris Malinchak’s ‘So Good To Me’ – a hit with Kaufela.

Carol told listeners that she was not married but was dating. She loved listening to music in her free time and favoured Zambian tracks, Rhumba and R&B. She was very active on Facebook and from time to time went clubbing with friends. An Arsenal supporter she made us laugh by claiming that Manuel Almunia was the reason she supported the Gunners. Odd that the former Arsenal keeper was in the news that very day as the result of a fantastic save he made playing for Watford in an important play off match. As for tourist activities Carol has done most of them, but had never bungee jumped and did not intend to!

It was a good show with lots of interaction with listeners on Facebook while we were on air and we were delighted that we had an on-line audience in UK enjoying and participating in the show. Asked where she would like to be and what she would like to be doing 10 years from now, Carol said that she hoped to go back to school soon to study marketing but that by 2023 she hoped to be finished studying and to have started her own business either in tourism or marketing. “Marriage and children”? We wondered. “We’ll see how it goes” Carol replied.

Ron Jere – Contact Trust Youth Association

We have had occasion in the past to feature Contact Trust Youth Association (CTYA) on the Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Kaufela, our weekly Sunday night radio show on
Zambezi 107.7fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station. We were, however, delighted to welcome Ronny Jere (pictured above), one of the Association’s pioneers and currently director and programme manager, on to our most recent edition. Ronny explained to listeners that the Association is a non-profit concerned with the good sexual health of young people in Livingstone, especially in connection with freedom from HIV Aids. It aims to encourage youth aged between ten and twenty four years to vote (if eligible) and to participate in government, as well as teaching young people job skills, economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Ronny said that the CTYA was formed some ten years’ ago out of the Cross Border Initiative now know as Corridors of Hope. Ronny had been inspired to start a youth group and hence CTYA was born. The Association’s offices are donated by Livingstone City Council in that they occupy council property rent free. There are eight full time employees. Ronny’s main job is to raise money for the programmes to be undertaken and to ensure that those resources are spent properly. He is also responsible for human resources management within the Association, including skills training. Some of the Association’s sponsors include or have included the South African Aids Trust and the German government.

The music on this particular show featured The Wanted, Rudimental ft Emile Sande, as well as Zambian artists Salma and Urban Hype. Milli Jam chose tracks from Lady Antebellum and Chris Brown. Our oldie of the week was Kriss Kross’s ‘Jump’ topical due to the untimely passing of Chris Kelly, one of the band. We were surprised that no-one won the prize we give each week to the first person to text us telling us the name of the artist on the track. We closed with Mafikizolo’s ‘Khona’ (Uhuru Mix) a very hot South African track.

Ronny told listeners that he is married and has three children including twins who have just turned three. “Naughty?” We wondered. “Very!” The reply. He owned up to supporting Man U, which we ignored but did say that his ‘real football team’ was the Zambian national team. That was ok! Ronny loves gospel, oldies, r&b and local music. He thanked Chanters Lodge for their sponsorship of the Association in the past and in thanking him we expressed our willingness to help again in the future if we could.

Asked where he would like to be and what he would like to be doing in ten years’ time Ronny said that as he would be moving out of the youth bracket during those years, he hoped to be serving the Zambian population at another level. Sounded like politics to us and we wished him all the best, thanking him for the great job his Association was doing for Livingstone’s youngsters!

Rafiki Village on ‘The Experience’!

Meet Karen Aufderhaar, (pictured above) school principal of Rafiki Village School in a rural area of Zambia some sixty kilometers from Lusaka, and Guest on the most recent edition of The Chanters Lodge Experience with the Milli Jam Ingredient featuring Kaufela. ‘The Experience’ is our weekly Sunday night radio show on Zambezi 107.7 fm, Livingstone’s leading local radio station.

Karen was staying at Chanters Lodge for some well deserved rest and relaxation having completed almost a year of her two year assignment at Rafiki Village. “Why Chanters Lodge?” Wondered Milli Jam. Karen explained that when she first accepted the voluntary assignment, one of the former directors of the village had told her that when she wanted some time off, a visit to Livingstone and Victoria Falls was a must, and that Chanters Lodge would suite her accommodation requirements. We were pleased to hear that Karen was happy with the recommendation and the lodge.

Karen told listeners that she came from a town near San Antonio, Texas in the USA, and had previously volunteered with Rafiki Foundation at a village in Kenya. She was delighted when the Foundation contacted her asking her to undertake the position in Zambia. She has been an ‘educator’ all her working life, but not always in a school situation, having undertaken education assignments in hospitals and an outdoor centre in the past, as well as teaching senior adults with learning difficulties. She explained that Rafiki Village in Zambia catered for some seventy orphans and was one of ten such villages in Africa. It was a childrens’ home and a training centre as well. It was hoped to expand the school to include secondary education in the near future.

The music on the show was good. We opened with Daft Punk’s number one UK hit ‘Get Lucky’ back to back with Macklemore’s follow up to Thrift Shop called ‘Can’t Hold Us’. Kaufela chose JK ft Petersen with ‘Kanyimbo’ coupled with Mampi’s ‘Wali Lo Welela’. Milli Jam featured Nikki Minaj and Sean Paul. Our oldie of the week was Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ and the prize given to the first listener to text us the name of the performing artist was quickly snapped up! Innocent won a dinner for two with drinks at the lodge.

Karen told listeners that she had enjoyed her days in Livingstone. She was tired from a lot of walking around the Falls area including climbing down to the Boiling Point (Rapid Number 1). She had visited and very much enjoyed Livingstone Museum and had loved her one day safari to Chobe NP in Botswana. She was looking forward to a sunset cruise on her last evening in town. Single, without children, Karen said she was a devoted aunty to her two nieces back in Texas. Music wise she favoured James Taylor and Neil Diamond, sports wise famous basketball team San Antonio Spurs. “Spurs” queried Milli Jam and I (Gunners to our boots). We laughed. She said her favourite player was Manu Ginobili.

Karen said she most missed her friends, family and Mexican food in Texas and that she loved Zambian people the most. Asked where she would like to be and what she would like to be doing in ten years’ time Karen answered ‘I would like to be back in my home town in America doing the next thing that God puts before me’. “Sweet” we said!
