Something Seriously Silly For Sunday!

A man in Tesco’s tries to buy half a cauliflower. The very young produce assistant tells him that they sell only whole cauliflowers. The man persists and asks to see the manager. The boy says he’ll ask his manager about it.

Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager, ‘Some prat out there wants to buy half a cauliflower.’
As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he added, ‘And this gentleman has kindly offered to buy the other half.’

The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way. Later the manager said to the boy, ‘I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here. Where are you from, son?’ ‘Liverpool, sir,’ the boy replied. ‘Well, why did you leave Liverpool?’ the manager asked.

The boy said, ‘Sir, there’s nothing but whores and footballers up there.”Really?’ said the manager. ‘My wife is from Liverpool.’ ‘You’re kidding?’ replied the boy. ‘Who’d she play for?’

Ras Mbisi Lodge, Mafia Island, Tanzania

My first two postings overseas when I was much younger than I am now were Mombasa Beach Hotel in Mombasa and The Reef Hotel, Seychelles – I never did quite get over them!

Now…. Why am I always doing this? Having just got over the beautiful Mustapha’s Place on Zanzibar, from Twitter I now find the gorgeous Ras Mbisi Lodge and I’m immediately back in a ‘Beam Me Up Scotty’ situation! Check the beach in the picture outside the Ras Mbisi front door – if indeed they have or need a front door!

This stunning Lodge is on Mafia Island off the coast of Tanzania and markets itself as ‘barefoot luxury’! Don’t you just love that! Here’s the blurb:

“Welcome to Ras Mbisi Lodge, the first bespoke, sustainably-built lodge on the west coast of the beautiful island of Mafia, Tanzania. We believe in offering our guests ‘barefoot luxury’: a retreat that is effortless, stunning and relaxed. We combine good food, striking accommodation and outstanding natural beauty in this untouched part of Mafia Island, to give you a taste of an informal, but luxurious, piece of paradise.

We also have ready access to some truly astounding wildlife in season, including whalesharks and humpback whales. The area also has a rapidly regenerating reef, and a wealth of marine life. This is reflected in Mafia’s Marine Park in the Chole Bay area; the largest marine protected area in East Africa.”

Ras Mbisi is a small private ‘beach meets bush’ lodge set on 8 kilometres of deserted beach where we offer luxury back to nature accommodation in an informal atmosphere. We are the only true beach lodge on Mafia Island.

Put your feet up and let us look after you. We take the idea of barefoot luxury seriously, and our aim has been to provide a piece of island paradise for you to unwind and relax in. Limited mobile phone and no internet access means you totally get away from the outside world.”

Want to get away from it all! Look no further! Oh! And give me a call, I WANT TO COME WITH YOU!

Travel On Twitter

A lot of my 250 odd contacts on Twitter are in the travel trade – not unexpectedly – so I was interested in this article by Michael Gray on Search Engine Land

“When working with different clients on social media related projects, one of the interesting aspects to look at is whether or not their industry embraced Twitter, and how well are the industry as a whole is using it. In some cases there is little to no engagement, in other cases the industry has embraced the medium, from large brand name corporations all the way down to local providers.

As I’ve stated in the past, there isn’t a right or wrong way to use Twitter, only a way that helps you meet your goals. However, when most companies use Twitter they fall into three general categories:

* Community engagement and customer service
* Broadcast channels for news, articles, and information
* Dedicated sales channel

It’s not surprising that the accounts with some of the highest follower counts, in some cases over a million followers, are those that fall into the “community and customer service” category, examples of these would be @jetblue, @southwestair, and @alaskaair. Traditional publishers such as @LATimestravel, @nytimestravel and @TravelMagazine use Twitter as a broadcast channel for their articles. An interesting variation of this method is used by @EmiratesAir, who tweets links to publications and articles about Emirates Airlines. Examples of sales channels include @Expedia and @SpiritAirlines.

It’s worth noting that very few people use it purely for community engagement, broadcasting or sales; instead, most use a hybrid strategy, with the majority of tweets falling into one category, but having some tweets of each type. In some cases, it makes sense to create a separate dedicated channel. An example of multiple channels comes from @jetblue who recently introduced @JetBlueCheeps specifically for discounted fares. Some companies also use Twitter to extend their real world marketing efforts and specialty campaigns such as the Travelocity Traveling Gnome @roaminggnome and Priceline’s William Shatner Price Negotiator @TheNegotiator.

As Twitter becomes a “breaking” news channel for many, the importance of having a presence on Twitter can’t be understated. For a small but vocal part of the population, Twitter is a primary news source, a prime example of this occurred during the US Airways Flight 1549 emergency landing in the Hudson River in New York City. Some of the earliest reports and photographs from the incident appeared first on Twitter. US Airways scrambled during a crisis to get an account working to push out official information @USAirways. The account has become dormant now, but the key point is if your customers are looking information here, you should be there too. The use of Twitter isn’t limited just to commercial and private organizations, for example the US State Department issues travel information via @TravelGov, as does the US Forest Service @forestservice.

While the majority of the organizations that get most attention on Twitter are larger national groups, there is a growing and active local travel component as well. Local but well known tourist destinations such as the Queen Mary in Long Beach have a presence on Twitter, @QueenMary. However smaller travel groups and companies such as Ohio Travel Association @OhioTravel, St. Louis Hilton @HiltonSTL, Tuscon Radisson @RaddisonTuscon, Alcatraz Cruises @AlcatrazCruises, and Air Ship Ventures @AirShipVentures are also on Twitter.

One of the biggest resistance points I get when I talk with clients about using Twitter or social media in general, is the fear of negative press and negative communication. However, hiding from negative feedback isn’t going to make it go away, remaining mute only makes you a bystander in the communication. One of the most disliked organizations in the world- the TSA, has a blog and presence on twitter @TSABlogteam, and should be case study for anyone concerned about negative feedback. For companies who still decide not to participate, the problem of fans or someone else developing a presence in their absence still exists. Case in point, the @AmtrakNews is an unofficial news feed for Amtrack. The @Amtrack profile is a non-malicious brand squat, it appears she’s securing “AM Track” and not trying to pretend to be the company. Sometimes a brand advocate or fan can also start up a profile, such as this fan from KLM Airlines @klmfan. The worst case scenario is if one of your detractors sets up a profile such as the @IHateEasyJet profile.

For companies who decide to participate but aren’t sure how and when to engage, the best suggestion is proceed slowly and with caution until you feel comfortable. Larger companies may find benefit in having more than one person doing the actual tweeting. In most cases, it’s best to let people know there are multiple people responding and to identify who is responding with initials or some other easily identifiable abbreviations. Some profiles such as @FrommersTravel link their twitter profile to a page with information about who is tweeting. If your organization is uncomfortable about how and when to engage others directly, you should review the US Airforce Social Media Response Chart (PDF) for guidance.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that participating in social media can amplify the voice and exposure of people or organizations who would normally have a very small reach. One social media advocate, @AdventureGirl has in excess of 1 million followers. There are a handful of travel bloggers @everywheretrip, @ecointeractive, @kathika, and @WeBlogTheWorld who each have between 50,000 to 100,000 followers, and yet, aren’t well known brands.”

Miss Zambia & Other Award Nominations!

Following on from yesterday’s story about Anawana Haloba nominated for an important art award in Norway here’s a story from The Post about more nominations for Zambia.

Reigning Miss Zambia UK, Andella Chileshe Matthews (above) has been nominated ‘best beauty queen’ in the Black Entertainment, Fashion, Film & Television Awards (BEFFTAs) to be held at London’s Hilton Metropole on October 17. According to a statement by Justina Mutale, chief executive officer of Perryfield Promotions, the organisers of Miss Zambia UK Beauty Pageant, the BEFFTA Awards is an international prestigious ceremony committed to recognising the all-around accomplishments of black stars.

Andella, who recently represented Zambia at Miss Universe 2009 in the Bahamas, joins other celebrity nominees such as supermodel Naomi Campbell, film star Noel Clarke, award-winning Jazz musician Yolanda Brown, and X-Factor sensations Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke. Others are Miss England Rachel Christie, celebrity photographer, Bukola Garace, top international models, Ibukun Jegede and Jasmina Robinson, and fashion designers Gavin Pierre Medford and Yemi Osunkoya of the world renowned Kosibah Creations.

Mutale stated that former Miss Zambia UK Rosemary Chileshe has also been nominated as ‘best former beauty queen’ while the Miss Zambia UK Beauty Pageant has been nominated ‘best beauty pageant’ and Perryfield Promotions has been nominated “best event promoter”. “I am very proud of Andella and Rosemary on their achievements and BEFFTA nominations. To have four BEFFTA nominations in our camp is a great achievement for us at Miss Zambia UK.

“We would be dedicating the BEFFTA Award to all the contestants who have ever participated in the Miss Zambia UK Beauty Pageant. By participating, they have each in their own unique way played a key role in making Miss Zambia UK one of the best pageants in the world,” Mutale stated.

Black stars to be honoured with the BEFFTA Awards will include musicians, dancers, choreographers, comedians, radio personalities, television personalities, film, actors, actresses, models, beauty queens, DJs, event promoters, fashion designers, hair stylists, make-up artists, photographers, spoken word artists, beauty pageants, community newspapers and magazines.

The BEFFTA Awards ceremony will be filmed for television broadcasting for both UK and international audience. The ceremony will be hosted by UK’s top comedian and Choice FM radio presenter, and TV personality Richard Blackwood.

Anawana Haloba

There’s lots of news about Zambians in line for international awards this weekend which is great! Here’s about the StatoilHydro art award in Norway and our nominee from Livingstone Anawana Haloba!

The StatoilHydro art award is a biennial award, the purpose of which is to stimulate and recognise talented young artists working in Norway (or Norwegian citizens working abroad) and enable them to develop their art. Worth NOK 500,000 (EUR 58,000 / USD 83,000) it is the largest art award in Norway.

Anawana Haloba (born 1978 in Livingstone, Zambia) works primarily with sound, video and installations. She studied at the Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts and Commerce in Lusaka, Zambia, the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, Norway and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She has exhibited in Oslo, Dakar, Venice, Sydney and Lusaka.

We wish her all the very best!
